The Role: Sr / Staff Mechanical Engineer
Tesla is looking for a highly motivated mechanical engineer to develop manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting edge Battery products. Battery development is at the heart of our company and this is an exciting opportunity work directly the central challenge with electric vehicles – battery cost. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work with a highly motivated team on extremely challenging projects.
In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, Mechanical Engineers work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Production to take Battery design changes and new Battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.

Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationallyExperience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas is highly desired:Position will offer unique and complex engineering challenges that require persistence, innovative thinking and a positive attitude Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, occasionally requiring extended hours.Proven ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple priorities simultaneously.Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.Aptitude to learn and incorporate new technologiesEither a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent with 7+ years of industrial experienceDemonstrated experience with new equipment installations and start-upsExperience with optimizing mechanical components to control elastic deformations on micron scaleExperience working with high speed/accuracy hydraulic positioners desiredProject management experience desiredExemplary verbal and written communication skillsDemonstrated experience ramping equipment into manufacturing – automation equipment, web handling, hydraulics, calendering, or roll to roll equipmentExperience with high power rolling applications in paper, rubber or steel industries desired Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment and high precision tooling in 3D (SolidWorks preferred)Communicate with quality team to specify quality spec and control process input and outputCommunicate with cross-functional teams on in-house development of novel and complex automation equipmentDevelop specifications for custom automation equipmentValidate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementationCollaborate with Design and Quality teams on metrology equipment and define process and product specification.Perform stress calculations and run FEA models predicting part/assembly performance under application loadsBecome owner / subject matter expert to drive design and new equipment from a rough concept to full productionClosely collaborate with external OEMs on custom equipment designDrive design, commissioning and ramp of precision calendaring equipment for battery manufacturing lines
